The first months of the school year bring a sharp change to morning traffic. Drop-off lines back up, kids cross mid-block, and drivers who spent the summer on an open road suddenly face a 15 mph zone with a crossing guard in it.

That mix causes crashes. Speed is the main problem. A driver going 30 mph in a school zone has far less time to stop than one going 15, and a child is much more likely to be seriously hurt at the higher speed.

Distraction is the second problem. Phones, coffee, and a rushed schedule pull eyes off the road right where small pedestrians are hardest to see.
